Pick Your Pipe Part 1: Made in America

In Part 1 of this series called, “Pick Your Pipe” we feature American-made pipe brands BriarWorks and Moonshine Pipes. In part two we will feature European-made pipes.

So get ready to pick your pipe!

It won’t be long before cool weather arrives, ushering in pipe season. And with 200 new pipes on our shelves from makers near and far, it’s the perfect time to come in and pick your pipe.

“Our customers love cigars, but pipes are popular too,” says Buddy Williams, manager of M.A.’s Smoke House. “Pipes offer at least two advantages over cigars. The biggest expense of smoking a pipe is the pipe itself, so pipes offer a more economical smoke than cigars. Plus, you can custom-blend pipe tobacco to your taste.”

Some of the most interesting new pipes on our shelves are American brands BriarWorks and MoonShine Pipes.

BriarWorks: Artisan Designed

When pipe makers Todd Johnson and Pete Prevost opened their production facility in Nashville, Tennessee, their goal was to change the perception of a factory-made pipe.

The result was the BriarWorks brand.

Today, Prevost is in charge of day-to-day operations and leads a team of talented pipe carvers who apply their artisan experience and skills to the factory pipe. Their goal is to make factory-produced pipes of the same quality as those artisan-carved, but at a more affordable price.

Some of the newest BriarWorks pipes on the market include: the Classic C11 Bullmoose, the Classic C101 Author, and the Classic C141 Cutty that comes in two stem styles: Tortoise Stem or Coffee Stem.

In 2018, BriarWorks relocated production from Nashville to a larger facility in Columbia, Tennessee that includes a retail shop and a smoker’s lounge.

MoonShine Pipes: Appalachian Inspired

Moonshine Pipe Co. was the brainchild of Virginian Jonathan Lavezzo who developed the brand and design aesthetic, and then partnered with BriarWorks to produce the first series of pipes.

Lavezzo’s idea was to bring old Appalachian craftsmanship to a broader audience with “simple, practical designs offered in a range of finishes from modern to striking.”

The success of the Moonshine XXX series pipes led to a number of other popular shapes and finishes. Eventually, Lavezzo moved on to focus on another of his passions – fly fishing – and handed Moonshine Pipes over to BriarWorks.

Today, popular Moonshine Pipes include Devil Anse, Stoker, Cannonball, Devil Dog and PotStill, all of which come in a number of finishes ranging from natural sandblasts to smoky contrast stains.
